Katskhi Pillar, Georgia

The Katskhi pillar is a – 40 meters tall – natural and imposing limestone monolith, located about 10 kilometers from the mining town of Chiatura, Georgia. At the summit of the pillar are the remains of a small church, abandoned for centuries before researchers decided to ascend it. It is now inhabited by Maxime Qavtaradze, a local monk who climbed the monolith in 1993.
