Biden’s Widest Lead As Trump Tested COVID-19 Positive
A national opinion poll showed that former vice-president and Democratic presidential candidate, Joe Biden was leading Republican President Donald Trump in a widest 10 point after the president was tested positive for the COVID-19 on late Thursday, October 1, 2020. The poll also suggested a majority of Americans viewed that Trump could have avoided infection if he took the virus outbreak seriously.
Trump and the First Lady had been admitted to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center after both of them reported having infected by the virus as the United States (US) presidential race became intense. Several critics including health professionals had been attacking Trump as he utterly ignored the dire consequence and severity of the virus outbreak. The pandemic has forced to shut business operations, restaurants, and schools in the US affecting millions of jobs with the death toll of more than 200,000 in the country.
The US election is approaching closer and a month away to cast a ballot, it remains unclear about the next presidential debate to be held on October 15. Meanwhile, the lone vice presidential debate between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Mike Pence is scheduled for Wednesday.
National Poll: Biden’s Lead
A Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Sunday, the two days national opinion poll conducted on October 2-3 showed a significant gain for Biden’s support for the upcoming national election, which is scheduled to be held on November 3. The poll was conducted online, in English, throughout the US and gathered responses from 1,005 American adults, including 596 likely voters.
The poll found that 51% of the respondents were supporting Biden while 41% of them said they would be voting for Trump. Of this remaining 8 %, half of them said to support a third-party candidate and the other half were undecided.
According to Reuters, “Biden’s 10-point edge over Trump is 1 to 2 points higher than leads Biden posted over the past several weeks, though the increase is still within the poll’s precision limits of plus or minus 5 percentage points.” Meanwhile, a handful of Americans also supported the idea of curtailing the 2020 presidential race to ensure the safety of the people during the pandemic.
Many Americans believed that Trump’s virus infection was part of his negligence about the threat posed by the pandemic. Last week, he even mocked at his rival candidate Biden for wearing a protective mask. Of the total respondents, 57% of Americans disapproved of Trump’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic overall, up about 3 points from a poll that ran late last week.
Meanwhile, the poll showed that only 34% believed that Trump was serious about the pandemic while 55% viewed that Trump lacked a proper policy and measures to address the pandemic, with 11% remained unsure about it. The poll also found that 65% including 9 in 10 registered Democrats and 5 in 10 registered Republicans agreed that “if President Trump had taken coronavirus more seriously, he probably would not have been infected.”
The poll showed that 67% of Americans opposed the in-person campaign rallies and 59% considered that the presidential debates should be postponed until Trump recovers from the coronavirus. Today, some news reported that Trump was showing improvement and recovering fast after the treatment while many of Trump’s supporters were gathering outside the Medical Center.
