Robert Nesta “Bob” Marley was born on o6 February 1945 was a Jamaican singer, songwriter and musician who became an international icon, blending mostly reggae, ska and rocksteady in his compositions.

In 1955, when Bob Marley was 10 years of age, his dad kicked the bucket of a heart attack at 70 years old. Marley’s mom went ahead to wed Edward Booker, an American government employee. The relationship brought Marley two American siblings: Richard and Anthony.

In February 1962, Marley recorded four songs, “Judge Not”, “One Cup of Coffee”, “Do You Still Love Me?” and “Terror”, at Federal Studio for neighborhood music maker Leslie Kong. Three of the melodies were released on Beverley’s with “One Cup of Coffee” being discharged under the alias Martell.

In July of 1977, Marley made a visit to the doctor’s office complaining of a pain in his toe.

The pain was not critical but rather had been pestering him on and off throughout a past couple of years. After running a few tests, the specialists found that Marley had a rare yet quickly developing type of disease called acral melanoma beneath his toenail. While the diagnosis was a serious one, the doctors had some positive news.

Doctors wanted to remove his toe to stop the spreading of cancer. Marley didn’t accept that and opted instead for a less invasive solution.

The doctors removed his nail and nail bed, then took a skin graft from the upper thigh to cover the area.

Marley recouped from the small surgery and kept visiting. He was planning a world tour in 1980. On September 21, 1980, Marley fell while running in Central Park. Click on the next page to know why he chose to die even his life can be saved.

He was conveyed to the doctor’s facility and, after few tests, specialists found that the tumor had spread to his brain.

As his health decayed, he traveled to Jamaica to be among family and friends. But, unfortunately, he never completed that last journey to his birthplace. His organs began to close down, and the plane made an emergency landing in Miami, Florida. Marley passed on there on May 11, 1981, at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital. He was 36 years of age.

So for what reason did he choose not to have the surgery that may have spared his life? Turns out, it was for religious reasons.

The conviction depends on Leviticus 21:5 in the Old Testament, “They shall not make baldness upon their heads, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh.” So while his demise could have been avoided, Marley went to his grave without trading off his otherworldly convictions.
