Walmart Unveils Its New Membership Program Named Walmart+

The American largest retail corporation Walmart launches its new membership program named “Walmart+” which has a series of benefits for its subscribers. Their membership service promises to provide unlimited same day free deliveries, fuel discounts, and grant to scan & go service which will alienate its subscribers from long checkout lines.

Walmart’s service will be accessible to its consumers from September 15, 2020. The service is going to be available in its 4,700 Walmart stores which offers delivery. According to the company, the members can choose to pay USD 98 annually after 15 days’ trial period or can go for a payment of USD 12.95 per month. It claims to provide services on more than 16,000 items and to qualify for the above-mentioned benefits, the member should have a minimum order of USD 35.

This program is an expandable version of “Delivery Unlimited” which the company launched a year ago. With the launch of “Walmart+,” the members of its old service will be moved to the brand new service. The members of the program will be granted a discount of up to 5cents per gallon on any fuel type. To get access to the fuel discounts, the subscriber needs to scan the QR code or enter the pin of the pump in the Walmart mobile app. This discount is available at 2,000 Walmart, Murphy USA, and Murphy Express stations across the country.

Walmart’s Scan & Go service is expected to help the consumers amidst the coronavirus outbreak as they need to spend less time in the store. The company had tested its Scan & Go technology two years ago and it had been a disaster as it led to the theft problems. However, as this service is a paid service it will aid the Walmart to combat the problems in a better way.

The company’s services are similar to its rival Amazon while Walmart considers that they are not competing with anyone. “We’re not launching Walmart+ with the intent to compete with anything else. We’re launching it with the needs of customers in mind,” explained Walmart Chief Customer Officer Janey Whiteside. Moreover, they think that Prime customers would switch their services to “Walmart+.” Meanwhile, if their program is compared to Prime, they offer one-day delivery for more than 10 Million products while same-day delivery for over 3 Million products on orders of at least USD 35.

“Walmart+” is primarily focused on same-day delivery services as the company already provides one-day and two-day delivery services without paying any subscription fee. Recently, Walmart reported an increase in online shopping owing to the pandemic which is up 97% than last quarter. Talking about the membership offering, Whiteside conveys that company’s offerings are not going to be static but they will be leveraging their assets and provide additional services and products to their loyal customers.

Besides this, on Thursday, Walmart announced that it will be joining Microsoft in a bid to buy short video sharing app TikTok. “We believe a potential relationship with TikTok U.S. in partnership with Microsoft could provide Walmart with an important way for us to reach and service omnichannel customers as well as grow our third-party marketplace and advertising businesses,” said Walmart in a statement.
